Quick answer (updated October 2026): Gatwick and Stansted now charge £10 to drop off outside the terminal, London City charges £8, and Heathrow and Luton charge £7. Each fee covers only a few minutes, it is paid online, and missing the deadline can bring a parking charge of £80 to £100. A pre-booked taxi from High Wycombe takes the hassle away. Dropping someone at the airport used to cost nothing more than the fuel. Not any more. London City Airport brought in its first drop-off fee in January 2026, which means all five of the main London airports now charge drivers simply to pull up outside the terminal. Gatwick and Stansted have also pushed their prices into double figures.
If you live in or around High Wycombe, the airports you are most likely to fly from are Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick and Stansted, with London City an option for short European and business flights. Below you will find what each one charges in 2026, how to pay without picking up a fine, and the simplest ways to keep the cost of getting to your flight down.

Charges as reported in October 2026. Taxi times are typical clear-road times, so allow longer at peak times. Airports review their prices regularly, so check the official pages before you travel: Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and London City.
Heathrow drop-off charge: £7
Heathrow’s Terminal Drop-Off Charge went up from £6 to £7 on 1 January 2026. It applies at every terminal, 24 hours a day, and you pay it each time you enter a drop-off zone, so going round twice means paying twice. There are no barriers: cameras read your number plate as you drive in.
You can pay in advance online or by phone, or afterwards up to midnight the following day. Cash is not accepted. Miss the deadline and the registered keeper receives an £80 parking charge, reduced to £40 if it is paid within 14 days.
The free option is to drop off at one of Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks and take the free bus to the terminal. Blue Badge holders can claim a full discount, but the vehicle has to be registered in advance. Planning a Heathrow trip? Gatwick drop-off charge: £10
Gatwick raised its forecourt charge from £7 to £10 on 6 January 2026, making it one of the most expensive drop-offs in the country. The £10 covers up to 10 minutes outside the North or South Terminal. As at Heathrow, there are no barriers and no cash payments; you pay online after cameras log your car.
If you would rather not pay, Gatwick’s long-stay car parks offer free drop-off with a shuttle bus to the terminals, so allow extra time for the transfer. Gatwick is around an hour and a half from High Wycombe by road, so it is also worth reading our honest comparison of taxi and train to Gatwick.
Luton drop-off charge: £7 for 10 minutes
London Luton charges £7 for up to 10 minutes in the Drop Off and Pick Up zone next to the terminal. After that it adds £1 a minute, up to a maximum stay of 30 minutes, so a long goodbye gets expensive quickly. Payment is online and must be made by midnight on the day after your visit.
The free alternative is the Long Stay car park, which has a shuttle bus to the terminal. Luton is usually 50 minutes to an hour from High Wycombe. See our Luton Airport taxi page for the fixed fare.
Stansted drop-off charge: £10 for 15 minutes
Stansted’s Express Set Down charge rose from £7 to £10 for stops of up to 15 minutes, and staying longer costs £28. You pay online or by phone by midnight on the day after your visit. An unpaid charge becomes a £100 parking charge notice, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
Stansted does have a free drop-off area in its Mid Stay car park, with a free shuttle bus to the terminal. At around an hour and 20 minutes away, it is the furthest of the main airports from High Wycombe, which is why many local travellers book a Stansted Airport taxi rather than ask a friend for a lift.
London City Airport drop-off charge: £8
London City was the last major London airport to offer free drop-offs. That ended on 6 January 2026, when it introduced an £8 charge for up to five minutes, with £1 for each extra minute up to a maximum of 10 minutes. The drop-off area is close to the terminal doors, but the airport sits in the middle of east London traffic, so leave plenty of time. Our London City Airport taxi page has the fixed fare from High Wycombe.
How to pay airport drop-off charges and avoid a fine
- Pay the same day. Most airports give you until midnight the following day. Set a reminder on your phone before you leave the terminal.
- Use the airport’s own website or phone line. Type the address in yourself rather than clicking an advert, so you know you are paying the airport and nobody else.
- Set up AutoPay if you drop off often. Several airports, including Heathrow and Stansted, let you register your number plate and card so the charge is taken automatically.
- Do not wait at the kerb. The charges are designed for a quick stop. Have bags ready to lift out and say your goodbyes before you arrive.
- Go round once. At Heathrow every entry into the zone is charged separately, so a second lap costs another £7.
- Remember who owns the car. Penalty notices go to the registered keeper, so if you borrow a car, the owner gets the bill.
The real cost of a “free” lift to the airport
Asking a friend or relative for a lift feels like the cheap option, until you add it up. They drive from High Wycombe to the airport and back when you leave, then do the same again when you come home. That is four journeys instead of two. For Heathrow it means roughly 80 miles of driving in total, plus the drop-off charge on the way out and short-stay parking to collect you, because most airports send people picking up passengers to their short-stay car parks. If your flight lands late, that parking keeps running.
Then there is the timing. An early departure means someone on the M25 at 4am, and a late arrival means someone circling the airport while your flight waits for a stand.
Is a pre-booked taxi from High Wycombe worth it?
For many trips, yes. A taxi drops you at the door and drives away, and the price is for the whole car rather than per person, so it gets better value the more of you are travelling. These are our fixed fares from High Wycombe:
| Airport | Fixed fare from High Wycombe |
|---|---|
| Heathrow | £50 |
| Luton | £65 |
| London City | £90 |
| Gatwick | £100 |
| Stansted | £100 |
Taxis and private hire cars pay the airport charges too. When you book, ask and we will confirm whether your quote includes the airport’s drop-off or pick-up charge, so you know the full price before you travel. On the way home your driver tracks your flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded, and you can ask for a female driver at no extra charge.

Airport Drop-Off Questions
Do taxis have to pay airport drop-off charges?
Yes. At Heathrow every black cab and private hire vehicle pays the £7 charge each time it enters a drop-off zone, and the other London airports charge taxis as well. Ask when you book whether your fare includes it.
What happens if I forget to pay the drop-off charge?
The registered keeper of the car receives a parking charge notice. At Heathrow it is £80, reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days. At Stansted it is £100, reduced to £60.
Which London airport is cheapest for drop-offs?
Heathrow and Luton, both at £7. Luton adds £1 a minute after the first 10 minutes, so it only stays cheap if you are quick. Gatwick and Stansted are the most expensive at £10.
Can I drop someone off at the airport for free?
Yes, if you have time to spare. Heathrow’s Park & Ride car parks, Stansted’s Mid Stay, Luton’s Long Stay and Gatwick’s long-stay car parks all offer free drop-off with a bus to the terminal. Allow at least an extra 20 to 30 minutes.
How long does a taxi take from High Wycombe to Heathrow?
Around 35 to 45 minutes in clear traffic. On weekday mornings allow 60 to 75 minutes, as the M25 approach to Heathrow is the usual pinch point.
Are Blue Badge holders exempt?
At Heathrow, Blue Badge holders can claim a 100% discount, but the vehicle must be registered in advance. The rules differ at each airport, so check before you travel.
