Steady Work, Because Demand Is Ahead of Supply
High Wycombe Taxis is a woman-owned firm, and we are recruiting drivers — women in particular.
Here is the honest reason. Every week we take bookings that ask for a female driver: women travelling home late, parents arranging school runs, older passengers going to hospital, families for whom it is not a preference but a condition of booking at all. Some of those we can fill. Some we cannot, and we have to say so.
That gap is the job. It means the work is pre-booked and allocated rather than sitting on a rank hoping something comes in, and it means regular passengers who ask for you by name.
What the Work Actually Looks Like
- School runs. Term-time, daytime, twice a day. This is the round that suits anyone who wants hours that fit around their own children, and it is the one most often requested with a specific driver.
- Hospital and appointment transport. Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville, Amersham and Oxford. Repeat passengers, often the same faces week after week.
- Airport transfers. Fixed-fare runs to Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and London City. Early starts, but a decent single job rather than a string of short hops.
- Local and evening work. Station runs, town journeys, and the late trade where a female driver is asked for most often.
Tell us the hours you actually want. We would rather build a rota round drivers who stay than fill a shift with someone who leaves in a month.
What You Need to Drive Private Hire
Private hire is licensed, and the requirements are set by the council rather than by us. If you will be driving in this area that is Buckinghamshire Council. As things stand you will need:
- A full driving licence you have held for at least three years
- An enhanced DBS check, signed up to the Update Service
- A medical certificate to Group 2 / D4 standard, dated within the last three months
- A pass on the council’s English language test
- A driving assessment certificate, if this is your first licence
- A safeguarding and disability awareness training certificate
- Evidence of your right to work in the UK
Fees and forms change, so check the current position on the Buckinghamshire Council driver licence page before you spend anything.

We will tell you plainly what the process involves, roughly how long it takes and what it costs, so you can decide whether it is worth it before you have paid for a medical. Plenty of people are put off private hire because nobody ever explained the steps in order. It is not complicated, it is just slow, and it helps to know that going in.

A Note on Who Can Apply
Anyone is welcome to get in touch. We are being open about actively encouraging women to apply because we are short of female drivers and we have customers we cannot currently serve because of it. That is a genuine gap we are trying to close, not a bar on anyone else.
